Abstract

This qualitative study examines the role of the local wisdom 'Tabe' (Bugis-Makassar politeness ethics) in conflict management within multicultural workplaces in Makassar, Indonesia. Using a case study approach across two multicultural organizations, data were collected through in-depth interviews (n = 20), participant observation, and document analysis. Findings reveal three key manifestations: (1) preventive communication (mappasitinaja), (2) cultural mediation involving pabbawa (traditional mediators), and (3) symbolic reconciliation rituals (mappatabe). Core values of 'Tabe' siri’ (dignity), accenni (respect), and pesse (empathy) proved effective in preventing escalation (78% of cases) and achieving sustainable resolution (92% long-term satisfaction) by restoring sipakatau (mutual humanity recognition). Key challenges include generational resistance and cultural meaning asymmetry. The study proposes a hybrid model that integrates 'Tabe' principles into modern HR procedures, resulting in a 40% reduction in recurring conflicts. Theoretical implications advocate for indigenous conflict-resolution frameworks in Global South contexts.
